The Giant Ocean Tank
How I Discovered a Sense of Belonging on Our Blue Planet

It’s 2019. With no money to his name after completing an AmeriCorps program, Stevie Raymond relocates to a friend’s couch in Boston, Massachusetts, where he stumbles upon the New England Aquarium. During his inaugural visit and a brief encounter with Myrtle, a 500-pound sea turtle, Stevie develops a new life goal: He wants to scuba dive in Myrtle’s home—the 200,000-gallon Giant Ocean Tank. What should’ve taken six months during a standard volunteer commitment ultimately turned into a grueling fifteen-month-long odyssey. It was clear from day one that Stevie would see this goal through to the end or die trying … well, not actually die. A majority of film protagonists say that, and he’s always wanted to state it himself, so let him have this.

Step behind the scenes and, through the eyes of a novice volunteer, witness what it’s like to work at a large-scale aquarium: preparing thirty pounds of food every day for specialized marine diets, assisting with examinations on sea turtles and moray eels, shadowing veterinary staff during necropsies, and, eventually, scuba diving in the massive Giant Ocean Tank, a microcosm of the oceans that are so vital to life on our “blue planet.” Not only will you experience the inner workings of the New England Aquarium’s largest exhibit, but you’ll also follow Stevie’s journey to discover a sense of belonging as he struggles to navigate life in his twenties. Living paycheck to paycheck while working multiple jobs, Stevie realized he yearned for something more, and he discovers it when he finally dives alongside Myrtle.
